During COVID-19 lockdown restrictions East Side House remained a leader in working with urban, at-risk youth and has maintained its longstanding partnership with the New York City Department of Education providing academic intervention, attendance improvement services, college and career preparatory programming and social service support for 2,800 students so that they can earn a diploma and create pathways to employment and higher education. East Side House partners with 10 high schools and operates a high school equivalency program for students who are no longer enrolled in school.
East Side House uses a model that is unique in today's services: we provide two layers of individualized support to ensure our students succeed. Each student is connected with a Primary Person, a caring adult who builds a relationship with the student, helps them build an academic and post-secondary plan, and supports and encourages students through challenges.
Students are offered further support by our Social Services Department, a team of professional Social Workers who address more serious barriers to our students' success.
In today’s economy, a high school diploma (or equivalency) is no longer sufficient to secure employment that will allow for economic independence. While study beyond high school has become necessary for economic security, our evidence confirms that the “college for all” mantra ignores meaningful alternatives for graduates.
Through this program, East Side House provides students the opportunity to explore career in the health and technology sectors and earn certificates in growing industries–while they pursue their high school diploma. The health and technology industries are two of the fastest growing industries and research shows employers struggle to find qualified workers to fill job demand. By offering students the opportunity to be trained for high demand careers, we’re creating a pipeline to connect the workforce to available jobs and career pathways.
